RAF Trimley Heath was the Metropolitan Sector Operations Centre after WWII. I served at Trimley Heath from 1950 until 1953. During that period there was a serious fire (October 1951?) which virtually destroyed the old SOC. In a very short time temporary GCI cabins were installed to the rear of the existing brick structure which also contained the reporting cell and the Chief Controllers ops room. The Sector Ops room was further back from the road in some temporary buildings close to where the remains of the smaller brick structures remain. The personnel from TH were based at RAF Felixstowe, travelling to and fro' each day and each shift change. The personnel from TH were therefore also caught up in the 1953 floods, I as a newly married and living in Langar Road close to the Martello tower. We were in bed at about 1 am when we were woken by debris smashing against the house. It was three days before I made contact with personnel who had been evacuated to Martlesham.  Regarding flying from Trimley Heath, there was for a while an Auster kept there which came to grief when taking off with three persons on board, failed to get airborne and crossed the main road coming to rest in the field the other side. The driver of the Ipswich to Felixstowe bus was surprised as the Auster passed in front of his vehicle!
