Like many others I was an ATC cadet in the sixties and took a number of flights from Stradishall in the Varsity fleet. One of them, A in 1965, is now on display at Brooklands. We were always the guests of a Polish Meteor pilot with a name like Makowski who took us from our Squadron (158) in Braintree. Any comments re apsects of this topic would be gratefully received.
Hello Russ, pleased to see you joined the forum, just think I used to service the engines on those 'pigs' at Strad in 1965!! I have also merged your thread into the main Strad page
You obviously did a good job, they kept me aloft for nearly 8 hours on one occasion! And we have plans this year to open the nacelles on the Brooklands Varsity and give the Hercs a spring clean. We have another ex engine fella (Finningley) on the team.
You might be aware that this aircraft WF372 was dumped on an airfield near Perterborough in 76 and used variously as a shed and a restuarant before it was recovered to Brooklands in 89. (Its on Utube) Since then work has gone on to keep it from the ravages of time and replace all the missing kit. Speaking of which, we have just fitted a Sperry bombsight but I can't recall if they were still in use as a bomber trainer in the Strad days?
